Zohran Mamdani confirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his victory in November.
"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
