The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
