The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
