The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new product within a personal series highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest development escalates the continuing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder stated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
