Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
