Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Excitement Abound

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
