New Year Revelers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are due to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Travelers are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Readings Expected to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Alerts Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely paramount.
