Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
