Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
