Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
